Surgical First Assistant

This position functions as a first assistant to the cardiothoracic surgeons at Mercy and United Hospitals. The first assistant provides aid in exposure, hemostasis, and other technical functions that will help the surgeon perform a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.


  • Function as a first assistant and second assistant to the surgeon during cardiac, thoracic, and peripheral vascular procedures.
  • Harvest saphenous vein and harvest radial artery per bypass protocol
  • Assist with closure of wounds including suturing and application of dressings
  • Assist with insertion of Intra-aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), Left Ventricular Assist devices (LVADs), etc.
  • Assist in moving and positioning the patient for surgery.
  • Assist in draping the patient and preparing the surgical field with everything needed for the procedure including but not limited to cautery, suction, and pump-tubing.
  • Anticipate the moves and technique of the surgeon.
  • Perform any and all other tasks required by the surgeon incident to the particular surgical procedure.
  • Cover call rotation on evenings and weekends at Mercy and United Hospitals.
  • Participate and obtain continuing medical education (CME) as required to maintain skills and knowledge.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled meetings.



  • Graduate of an approved, certified Surgical Technologist program OR documented experience assuring the competencies to perform responsibilities for which hospital privileges are requested; Minimum two (2) years surgical experience
  • Demonstrate application of knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and other cognitive education with additional education in the use of surgical instruments on tissues versus the handling of instruments.
  • Recognize the importance of teamwork and have the ability to communicate and interact effectively with physicians, peers, clinic staff and hospital staff.
  • Identify emergency situations and use sound judgement in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm, efficient and effective manner.
  • Respect the patient’s right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Apply the principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to provide optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrate initiative in expanding knowledge of new surgical procedures and subjects relating to the operating and the surgical patient.
  • Current training in Basic Life Support (BLS) and current certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Preferred experience assisting cardiovascular and/or thoracic surgery.
