Self-Represented Litigant Program Paralegal

Description:

 

This is a full-time, benefits-earning Paralegal position with the Minnesota Judicial Branch's Self-Represented Litigant (SRL) Program.  
 
This position will primarily work in the State Court Administrator's Office, Statewide Self-Help Center (SHC), located in downtown Minneapolis. The SHC provides legal information to self-represented litigants (SRLs) with legal issues that can be addressed in District Court, pursuant to Minn. Gen. R. Prac. Rule 110.   The goals of the SHC include increasing access to justice for individuals who cannot afford to hire or who choose not to hire an attorney to represent them, and improving the efficiency of the Minnesota Judicial Branch.   
 
This position may also occasionally provide assistance to SRLs at the Fourth Judicial District's walk-in SHC locations in the Hennepin County Government Center and Family Justice Center, also located in downtown Minneapolis.
 
Example of Duties:
Acting under the direction of the SRL Program Manager, Supervising Attorneys, and Staff Attorneys:
  • Provide legal information to SRLs in a variety of settings: in-person, over the phone, via email and web-based technologies
  • Assess SRLs' need for legal advice and representation; educate SRLs about the need for legal advice and local legal community resources
  • Educate SRLs in plain language about what is involved in filing or responding to a court case including pre-trial motions and conferences, alternative dispute resolution, uncontested and contested hearings, and evidentiary matters
  • Assist SRLs using computer-based document-assembly and electronic filing tools
  • Other duties, as assigned

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Certification as a paralegal through the PACE or CLA/CP certification exams, or possession of an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or university in law, criminal justice, court administration, or a related field
  • Experience in a legal setting is required
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal background check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Fluency in a second language
  • Two years of legal or court experience
  • Experience drafting and/or reviewing legal pleadings
  • Ability to simplify legal concepts and terminology to effectively communicate with SRLs
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Knowledge of local legal services and community resources

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated customer service skills
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and other computer skills
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent analytical, and verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of issues facing people experiencing homelessness, violence and poverty.

SALARY RANGE & BENEFITS:  $23.77 - $36.89 ($49,632 - $77,026 annually).
