Job Summary

This position promotes and protects the radiological health and safety of the public, employee's health and safety, and the safety of the environment by conducting inspections to ensure compliance with Minnesota Rules and MDH policies; obtaining prompt correction of violations and adverse conditions that may affect radiological safety; deterring future occurrences of conditions of potential safety problems, promoting improvement of the regulated entity's performance; promoting MDH by professional example; and conducting evaluation and review of the service provider program.

Responsibilities includes:

  • Determine compliance with state regulations by performing routine or special radiation safety inspections of higher and lower risk x-ray radiation facilities. Independently review self referral screening applications.

  • Write appropriate inspection notes, independently prepare written inspection reports on inspections conducted, and all necessary letters and enforcement documents, including administrative penalty order documents as required.

  • Compare findings to requirements established in the Minnesota Statutes and Minnesota Rules to determine and evaluate any violations. Testify at hearing when the x-ray unit findings are challenged.

  • Assist enforcement coordinator and peer reviewer on follow up of deficiencies found during inspections.

  • Review and monitor applications for service providers to verify compliance with applicable Minnesota Rules.

  • Assist lead inspector with the service provider program by independently reviewing and maintaining applications according to the x-ray unit’s critical process.

  • Assist the supervisor in developing and refining of the industrial x-ray equipment uses within the x-ray unit.

  • Participate as a member of the Radiation Emergency Response Team to assist in preventing unnecessary radiation exposure to the public.



Minimum Qualifications:

Masters in Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, a physical or biological science, or a related field AND 2 years of professional experience as a safety, health, or compliance officer for a scientific, environmental, or regulatory health and/or safety enforcement program as described below.

OR

Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Health Physics, Radiological Sciences, a physical or biological science, or a related field AND 3 years of professional experience as described below.

AND

Experience work with radiological health regulations and requirements; health physics principles and practices; the use and application of radioactive materials or ionizing radiation equipment; radiation laboratory instrumentation; enforcing, monitoring or investigating standards regarding radiation protection; or radiation detection instrumentation and isotope analysis. 

A certificate in Health Physics, NRRPT, or Industrial Hygiene will substitute for one year of professional experience.

Ability to travel statewide.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred degree in health physics, non-destructive testing, industrial hygiene, or a related field.

Knowledge and experience with industrial analytical, gauging, and cabinet equipment inspection, servicing, and use.

Experience in a radiation protection, health physics, industrial hygiene, or radiation science program conducting health and safety investigations.

Ability to make comprehensive decisions based on awareness in radiation physics, biology and protection to ensure facilities are using the equipment in a safe manner.

Written communication skills to write narrative technical reports that are grammatically correct.

Verbal communication skills to clearly communicate technical information to the public.

Skills to locate relevant, evidence-based, and credible resources for all areas of responsibility.

Ability to analyze and evaluate requirements of applicable laws, rules, policies and develop recommendations and procedures to assure compliance.

Ability to use computers and software programs to produce investigation reports. Knowledge of, and demonstrated ability in, the principles and uses of spreadsheet and database programs including proficiency in Excel.

Ability to effectively prioritize and manage simultaneous tasks.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.

Job may also require significant standing or walking over rough terrain and ability to work outside in inclement weather.

Additional Requirements

This position requires successful completion of the following:

Must successfully pass a background check. 

Must possess a valid Class D driver’s license.
