Job Summary

Elevate your career in public health as an Assisted Living Engineering Supervisor with the Health Regulation Division (HRD), where your impact reaches across all Minnesotans. In this role, you will supervise and lead the Assisted Living Engineering staff as they perform construction document reviews, inspections, and surveys to ensure the assisted living facilities comply with physical environment requirements defined in state law and rules.

The Assisted Living team serves facilities located throughout the state of Minnesota with 50% of work time spent onsite at designated facilities. When not onsite, remaining follow-up work is performed by teleworking from your home office. Travel reimbursement is provided according to bargaining unit guidelines.

P osition location will be determined by the top candidate and will be based out one of the following MDH district office locations: St. Paul, St. Cloud, Duluth, Rochester, Marshall, Bemidji, Fergus Falls.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Four (4) years of experience with plan reviews, inspections, surveys, or the rules, regulations and codes involving the design and construction of buildings.

AND

Demonstrated leadership experience that may include:
  • Experience as a supervisor, lead worker, team lead or project lead
  • Completion of a State of Minnesota leadership program
  • Completion of a similar or equivalent leadership development program through another organization

Minimum qualifications that will be assessed during the interview process:
  • Knowledge of the MN State Building Codes as they relate to the different types of assisted living facilities and the State statute licensure of facilities.
  • Experience using the 2018 edition of the life safety code and 2018 edition of the Facility Guidelines Standards that apply to assisted living facilities.
  • Demonstrated planning skills sufficient to plan and organize large projects, prioritize, and make recommendations or decisions on the direction of a project.
  • Leading teams to meet the organization's expectations for productivity, quality, or goal accomplishment.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to manage, guide, and communicate with staff and partners at all levels.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct technical and administrative activities of staff and partners.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Two-year degree in engineering, architecture, construction services, drafting or related field.
  • Experience with MDH's current survey processes and data sources/programs.
  • Experience conducting quality improvement activities and coaching a team to be consistent with each other.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing construction plans and construction sites for compliance with state and federal standards, statutes, and adopted codes and standards.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to be mobile on rough and unfinished topography to access all areas of construction.
  • Ability to climb a ladder and a stairwell to access mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to bend over and work in the prone position to inspect various components of the architectural, mechanical, and electrical system of the building.

Additional Requirements
  • This position requires successful completion of a background check and employment reference check.
  • This employment does not require a valid driver's license, but it does demand travel, which the candidate will be responsible for meeting.
