I recently attended a luncheon with Governor Tim Pawlenty. He spoke on the state of Minnesota’s economy. He stated “Minnesota is not attractive to big businesses, they will not come here.” He said, one thing that is needed in Minnesota is a grassroots movement of entrepreneurs and small business owners to stimulate Minnesota’s economy.
Most people hear such political talk and simply ignore it. Partly because they consider themselves an employee instead of an employer. This way of thinking comes from psychological conditioning and misinformation. Myth 1: The largest employers in the US are fortune 500 companies. False, it is small businesses. Myth 2: You need at least $10,000.00 and a detailed business plan in order to start a successful small business. False, you can start with $100.00 and an idea. Myth 3: I have job security and benefits with a “big company.” Obviously false, recently 3M in Cottage Grove, Minnesota announced early retirement/ layoffs of 3,600 employees, and General Motors. . . and Chrysler. . . you know their stories!
People have so mush false information in their mind in regard to starting a business it is astonishing! Starting a small business or “microbusiness” is within reach of everyone. If you are unemployed the fork in life’s road is dead ahead. Your choices: Should I try to get a “secure job” working for someone else or start my own business? You may be thinking, if I start a business I might fail. This is true. But guess what, if you get another job will they guarantee you won’t ever be laid off, will they guarantee you employment for any length of time? Will they guarantee your salary will never go down, your benefits will not decrease? Interesting! What is so secure about that?
This article is not meant to be an indictment against big companies. I’m just asking you to think! What are your reasons for searching for another job? Are your assumptions real or based on a fantasy of incorrect information? What are your reasons for not starting your own business? Are they factual or based on false information you heard from someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about?
